OH! INFANT JESUS
‘God so loved the world that he gave His only
son’. This is the key to enter into the mystery of Christianity.
Christianity is the messenger to the world of the self revelation of God as
the unconditional self sacrificing love made present in the person, deeds
and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth.
Jesus
in his days on earth discarded as irrelevant the usual human paradigms,
mental imageries of what God should look like. Instead he took upon himself
the form of a slave from birth in the manger to dying on the cross. It is so
distant from conventional ideas of divinity. Thus he deigned to share in
depth the worst possible human physical, moral, social and psychological
distress and proclaimed loud and clear that God is not distant or alien to
human misery. In fact God is the God who loves, heals and liberates.
This is the way God shared our fate; and chose
to reveal his saving face to humanity in Jesus Christ. This is the unique
power of God and wisdom of God the Immanuel; the word that became flesh and
dwelt amidst us. He is a God of love, God who cares, God who liberates and
frees us from every enslavement; a God beyond every love, one who is true
love itself.
The devotion to infant Jesus of Prague is
therefore is at the core of Christian faith and leads everyone to that
response in faith to a God who revealed himself as a tremendous love. It is
the great mystery of the tremendous power of unconditional selfless undying
love that loves still even to the point of dying.
If the feast of Christmas is meant to celebrate
the mystery of the historical birth of Jesus throughout the world, the
devotion to Infant Jesus immerses the believer deeper in the mystery of
God’s love that helps us to grow to be God’s Children; to be able to call
him Abba Father and puts us on the pilgrimage of deeper spiritual quest and
wholeness. For Jesus said, “let the children come to me as theirs is the
kingdom of God”. He loved children and loves being venerated in the image of
an infant.
This devotion to Infant Jesus was started in
Spain especially around the figure of St. Teresa of Avila (1515-1582) who
encountered the child Jesus in a vision in her cloistered convent. He
identified himself as Jesus of Teresa. After her, the devotion spread among
the Carmelites and then overflowed into Spain. The images of Jesus the child
received a great welcome among the Christian faithful far and wide
confirming the place it has in the lives of Christians. It is diffused all
over the world from the main Carmelite shrine in Prague in Czeck republic
and at Arenzano in Genoa, Italy. It has spread all over India too, Carmel
Hill Mangalore, Viveknagar Bangalore, Nasik etc. being the older shrines.
The devotion to Infant Jesus in Naidunagar,
Mysore is the offshoot of Mangalore shrine. The Carmelites from Mangalore:
Fr. Lawrence D’Mello OCD, Fr. George Santhumayor OCD and Fr. Dominic Vas
OCD responded effectively to numerous requests from the devotees to have a
worthy shrine at Mysore. It was envisaged as a worthy monument for the 2000
year jubilee of the gift God gave the humanity of salvation in Jesus Christ.
The foundation stone was laid on Christmas of the year 2000 and the work of
building the church was completed on 4 January 2004. It is meant to be a
place of interior peace, wholesome healing and true joy in life of the
devotees and that of their families, nay to the whole world. It indeed day
by day attracts very many to Jesus Christ.
This house of God, fruit of serious reflection
and prayer is a feast to human eyes, a master piece of Christian art in the
Indian context. It is meant to help every visitor to taste the Mystery of
God’s selfless love even without the help of a guide. The poetic blending
of typical Mysore architecture with mantapa style sacred construction with
the mogul artistic towers and huge windows, the majestic Corinthian capitals
on the pillars in the inside, the exquisite door carvings, very captivating
images in its numerous and lively stained glass frames, artistic window
grills and intriguing symbols rich in biblical and religious imageries, the
vivid replica of Leonardo Vinci’s last supper freeze, the Eucharist
tabernacle ensconced in a weaver’s nest inviting you to come home for the
supper time, the basket of the Word of God helping you to brood in it and
emerge renewed and above all the suave, mystical and fascinating sculpture
of the crucified, life less but life giving, slumped on a real tree, are all
a rich meditative journey through the great themes of the Old and the new
testaments. They are so geared to help the pilgrims to insert themselves
easily into the mystery of the God’s loving and caring presence.
Streams of People, young and old, Christians
and non Christians keep coming throughout the day and are found lost in deep
prayer and encounter with God, especially before the bl. Sacrament; and go
back leaping with joy, anointed and healed. There are very many authentic
testimonies of healings, physical, moral and spiritual that evidence this
place is meant by Jesus to be a privileged place to make every one
experience His vicinity in their life and find healing and wholeness.
True to our avowed purpose this house of God
and gate of Heaven is welcoming the faithful from morning 05.30 to night
09.30. The attractive crypt with peaceful setting and silent atmosphere has
the Eucharist exposed throughout the day. The Lord waits for you. He is
never tired of anyone. He never rejects a sincere person. Even when everyone
walks out of your life you can walk in to His presence and find wholeness. A
team of competent priests are at your service for spiritual counseling and
sacramental needs. Rev. Fr. Wilfred Frank is the Priest-in-charge and is
available round the clock for the needs of the pilgrims.
The times we live in have made us comfortable
physically but lonely, barren in human relationships and emptiness bereft of
deeper meaning of life. Still the heart is not satisfied. It is created for
God alone. It is longing for richer spiritual nourishment and prayer.
So dear friend, co-pilgrim in this life journey
it does not matter what your situation in life is. You are not a stranger to
Jesus………Do come to Pushpashrama Infant Jesus Shrine at Naidunagar and meet
Jesus personally. Find out from him what he thinks of you and……….. you will
be surprised. Ask him what he wants to tell you about yourself and
……………….you will be a new person. What more can he do for you!!
The house is open for prayer, retreats
throughout the year. A team of experienced priests are available for the
spiritual direction and guidance on life’s journey. In case you need a
longer stay, there are decent pilgrim’s quarters and dormitories that can
accommodate even a 100 persons, elders or children at a given time.
COME TO INFANT JESUS AND GO BACK RENEWED.
